Sam's Farewell

I can't even believe that this time has come and gone. Sam Neff received his mission call to serve in the Juiz de Fora, Brazil mission. There is a definite shift in the Thelin family, the opening of a new chapter where the grandkids are now leaving the house. This year it was Sam with his mission and next year it will be Macie for college. Craziness. The end of September we all flew up to Oregon to get one last chance for the family to all be together before Sam would leave. We really wanted to be there to support him, but also so that his positive influence and example would be impressed upon Boyd and Brewer. And also because Lola loves Sam so much, he is one of her favorites! We also knew that we wouldn't be going to Oregon for Thanksgiving because I would be too close to my due date, so we took advantage of the occasion and spent the weekend there. While we were boarding, the flight attendants pulled my kids aside and asked if they wanted to sit in the cockpit. Boyd politely declined (which he later regretted) but Brewer bravely wanted to see what that was about. What we didn't realize was that that co-pilot would get out of his seat, let Brewer sit in it and hold the controls. If the smile on his face doesn't say happy, I don't know what would.
It was a great time in Oregon, lots of family togetherness and celebrating Sam and his decision to serve! He seemed so ready and excited. We were able to go to the temple together, listen to him speak and sing at church and attend the open house. We just loved our time up there so much!! We were even able to participate in a top-secret (still top secret) activity for Grandma involving the grandkids. It should be pretty special. And of course, my dad took the kids to return pop cans and let them spend money on candy at the store afterwards. Thank heavens Brewer finally made a decision on the candy he wanted. Decision making is not his strong suit. =)
Sam is such an awesome young man and will be an amazing missionary. I can't wait to hear about all his adventures, his trials and his triumphs and how he grows in strength in our Savior Jesus Christ!
