Sun Valley 2020

It's been a busy winter, which is unusual, but I am celebrating that fact! Usually January creeps by, but we've had plenty of activities that have made it zoom! Going to Sun Valley was one of those things that made January extra fun! Instead of going over President's Day weekend, the trip was moved up to the last weekend in January. After going to the pool on the first night, we all agreed that going earlier (or not on a holiday weekend) was an awesome decision! The resort was much quieter and we actually had the pool all to ourselves most of the time. I was a fun swim session and a blast for the cousins to get their energy out playing and swimming together. Phil and I were both surprised by how much Riggs loved the pool. He isn't crazy about baths at home, but we strapped him in to his floatie (which he did not like back in September) and he was as content as can be!
Friday brought skiing for the boys in the morning and Phil joined up later with them in the afternoon. They had a good time skiing at Dollar and as always explored the terrain park. This year Dollar Mountain offered even more fun as they had some competitions going on. So not only did you have a blast skiing down the mountain, you had an entertaining time riding up the lift, watching skier after skier catch big air and do tricks. Lola also had a turn up at dollar and skied with Claire and Weston.  Friday evening Boyd and I set off to set up a treasure hunt that we had prepared together for the cousins. It went around Sun Valley and the clues led to all our favorite and memorable spots. With each new clue that they found, specific cousins had to complete a mini challenge before they could open the next clue. I'll include the clues and challenges at the end of the post. It was maybe a bit long for our age group, but it was fun to see the kids excited and each want to take a turn reading the clues.  That night we also had a fun and funny discussion about the two teams playing in the super bowl. Each side had at least one passionate fan that presented their case of why others should root for their team.
Saturday, I was able to ski with Phil and the boys up at Dollar and we spent most of the time at the terrain park. Boyd was killing it trying the different boxes and jumps. He got up his courage and nailed the bigger jump quite a few times. It was fun to see him push himself and succeed! Brewer also pushed himself and eventually tried the rainbow box after a few times of saying he was going to do it, and then turn and ski off to the side of the box. When he finally did it, he nailed it perfectly and it put quite a lot of pep in his step...or slide in his ski, or whatever, he was just juiced and we were so proud of him. After dinner that night, we completed our annual massive bowling expedition. It's pure chaos between the sheer amount of people, the amount of babies, and the noise level in the small bowling alley. But those are the best memories the kids just have a ball! Haha, see what I did there? Riggs actually did really good there. I was surprised by how long we lasted down there. He was quite interested in the video games and walked all over the place exploring. He had a love-hate relationship with the bowling balls rolling back. At first loved seeing them come and would get really excited they were headed his way. Then he would get frustrated. Maybe they went to fast for him or maybe he didn't realize where they went after they passed his view. Either way, it entertained him on and off for a while. After a bit, once he was determined to be IN the lanes, I took him upstairs and we wandered the halls of the lodge, where he was perfectly content to not be held and have freedom. Ugh. He's definitely my most adventurous and independent baby.
In the early morning hours of Sunday, Lola and myself became sick. Nooooo! We were both barfing and not too long after that so was Boyd. It felt like a bit of a nightmare. But thankfully our kids are old enough that we didn't have too much of a mess or tears. It was a BAD stomach bug and we filled many garbage can liners and made many trips to the bathroom. After a while longer, Riggs joined the sick team and Phil did an amazing job taking care of him. He was a champ though, and hardly cried and was content to lay around and snuggle and sleep on me. Riggs perked up first and then Lola. Boyd and I weren't feeling good at all that day and just laid around and tried to sleep. Others were taken down during the day too. Phil mentioned that he was starting to not feel well, so in the evening I mustered what I could, cleaned Lola's bedding and packed all I could. I thought if Phil was going to be sick, then I needed to pack because I wouldn't have his help in the morning. And that was the case. He got sick late at night and it wasn't long before he was spiraling out of control. Thank goodness Steve had some Zofran, that saved Phil from throwing up every 10-20 minutes. And thus ended anything interesting or eventful from Sun Valley. After a few days passed, it was something like over 2/3 of the group ended up getting sick. They only people that didn't get the bug were those that had some sort of stomach bug a few weeks earlier. Oh heavens, we will all be praying that never happens again! And while, it was not how we wanted our vacation to go, we still had a couple of really fun days and were so glad to spend time with our whole fam!!

Note to Self: Still need to add Brewer's video and the treasure hunt.
