Broken Leg in February

Back in January and February there was some excitement around our house as Phil was able to get out and experience some freedom and finally be able to do something that he really wanted! All through January Phil and Brett Cooke worked on Phil's dirt bike and converted it into a timbersled. He was stoked and had such a great time riding. It was awesome to see him come home with that same old look he had when he used to dirt bike. Just a man, being a man out in the wilderness. It was great for everyone and gave our family a much needed boost. Sadly, after only 4 or 5 rides, Phil came back with a broken leg. It was devastating. I felt so bad for Phil. He had worked so hard to get him to where he was and to finally get out of the house doing something fun. The doctor explained that had there not been hardware still in his leg, it likely would not have broken. The hardware caused the leg to not flex and focused all the pressure just below the metal, causing the bone to snap. It was heart wrenching. Another six to eight weeks on crutches.

Look back, we had to laugh a little as we acted like this was going to be as bad as falling off the cliff. We actually had to learn that you can break a bone without dying. However, even though it wasn't as physically damaging, it was pretty rough emotionally. It was a hard one to bounce back after for me and especially for Phil. We also discovered that his leg was pretty crooked. Another blow to Phil's healing journey. It was causing his hip pain and we knew we needed to start figuring out when and how to straighten it out. But of course, through all the craziness, and difficulties, Phil just bore it all and made the best of it, however hard it was. I'll always be so impressed by everything he's endured through these past few years.
