The last weekend in May we had to travel down to Salt Lake, to Primary Children's Medical Center for a follow up appointment for Brewer. He was scheduled for a renal nuclear scan to check on his kidneys to see if they were showing any signs of improvement. We opted to leave very early Friday morning to cut down on drive time and to also give us an extra night of good sleep in our own beds. Our appointment at PCMC wasn't the afternoon so we ran some errands including getting my hair done!! Brewer's appointment went well, except for the nuclear scan. It was so sad watching him get his catheter and IV. The poor kid seems to have to be poked at least twice for them to be able to place an IV and this time was no different. After all the lines were placed the technicians finished strapping him down and then he just cried and it was so so sad!! The only things he could move were his hands and head and even then he could only shake his head back and forth. So that was he did. He shook his head no and grasped for us and our hands. It was heart breaking. He had to lay still for 45 minutes to complete the scan, but thankfully (in a way) he didn't have to be quite for it to work. It took quite some work for Phil and I to calm him down enough to fall asleep. He did eventually slept and are expectations of no improvement seemed to be confirmed as we watched the fluid move through his kidneys. Up until this point there had been no improvement in his kidneys and we got the impression that he would most likely need surgery. So we were prepared to hear that news and were expecting to schedule a surgery date. But we were pleasantly surprised by the results! His right kidney had improved to the point that they weren't worried about it any more. And his left kidney, which has always been worse, was improving!!! Dr. Snow, the Urologist, suggested we wait another year and follow up again. I was both glad for this news and a little disappointed Brewer would have to be on his antibiotic for another year. But the good news kept coming and Dr. Snow thought we should try taking him off his antibiotic and see how he does. He explained that the chance of infection was very low. We were thrilled for that news!!! It was a great appointment!!
The boys were excited to finally get to Provo, to Grandma and Pop Pop's house. We stopped in at Cubby's to get some dinner and even met up with Steve, Rachel and Claire! The next morning Phil was up early to go golfing and I was left with the most handsome boys in my bed! Later that afternoon Phil played with the boys outside and then we all went swimming at Riverside! It was quite the adventure filled trip for these two boys! We were so happy to be able to spend some time with Phil's family and enjoy the truly warm summer weather! Sunday we headed off to church before going home and I happened to run into Nikki, my old college roommate and her family!! It was so great to see her and her cute family!
